The Dilbert® Principle of AI: Why the People With the Most to Gain Are the Wrong People to Decide

Politicians and vendors have a stake in how the AI debate turns out. Traceability, transparency, and the people who have lived through previous hype cycles belong in the loop.

The public conversation about artificial intelligence (AI) is being framed, funded, and decided largely by two groups: politicians, whose careers depend on campaign money and a winning message, and vendors and investors, whose valuations depend on AI being adopted as quickly and as broadly as possible. Neither group is necessarily incompetent. Both are conflicted. When the people with the largest stake in an outcome are also the people analyzing it, the conclusion is chosen before the analysis begins.
