What Is Enterprise Architecture? A Practitioner's Definition for 2026

Most definitions of Enterprise Architecture tell you it is about aligning IT with business strategy, drawing a few diagrams, and managing complexity. That framing is not wrong, but it is borrowed from the general literature, and it produces practitioners who can talk about Enterprise Architecture without ever being able to do it.

There is a real gap between what most certification programs teach and what Enterprise Architecture actually requires when you walk into an organization. Most programs prepare you to pass an exam. Very few prepare you to architect an enterprise on Monday morning. This article gives the practitioner's answer to what Enterprise Architecture is, what it is not, and why the path you choose determines whether you learn to do Enterprise Architecture or only learn about it.

The definitions here come from the Enterprise Architecture Center Of Excellence (EACOE™), where Sam Holcman has served as Managing Director since 1972, drawing on more than 4,500 field engagements and five decades of practice. They are not internet summaries of someone else's framework.
